Set in a cove on the island of Menorca is the lovely little beach of Cala en Porter. You can drive right to the beach. Our sat nav wasn’t obvious in finding it but if you place the pin at “steps to beach” on the map, you will find the car park. Having said that, there are no steps to the beach from the car park, just a flat path leading first to the children’s play area at the back of the beach. The play area is good for young children if they get fed up with the sea and sand.
There are sun loungers and parasols for rent at €6 each per day (August 2018) or you can find yourself a nice spot in the sand. There are also pedalos with slides and kayaks to rent.
The sea is marked with buoys to form a swimming area, a pedalo area around this and further out, space for larger boats. You can however swim outside of the buoys and near to the rocks at your own risk.
The sea is great for snorkelling and stronger swimmers will enjoy snorkelling along the rocks at the right of the beach, discovering little caves and lots of fish. Beware of sea urchins though, the little dark purple balls of spikes will certainly let you know if you touch them!
At the back of the beach is a fenced of conservation area, which, although you cannot enter, keeps the place looking a little bit wild and natural.
There is a local bus service from the bus station in Mahon to Cala en Porter and a tourist train from the center down to the beach. In summer there are approximately 6 buses a day.
Visiting the beach with an autistic child?
Beaches can be great sensory experiences for autistic children. This post is part of a series of about the different beaches in Menorca, designed to give you an idea of what to expect when visiting each beach. Hopefully from my descriptions you will be able to work out which beach would best suit your family. Don’t forget to be prepared with plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and hats!
