A roundup of activities you can do in Finnish Lapland

There is nothing quite like looking out of the window in the morning to see the trees heavily laden with snow, set against a background of pastel coloured skies.

Put your snowsuits on, get the sledges out of your locked outdoor storage and slide straight down the hill into a winter wonderland!

When you need to warm up from playing in the snow, you can dry your clothes in the apartments electric drying cupboard, warm some berry juice on the stove for the children and read a book in the private sauna whilst they snuggle in front of the TV.

Lapland really is a dream come true for children and adults alike!  My children were so excited last night when I told them we are going back next year, and the excitement is catching! I have spent the morning looking for activities to do when we get there and reminiscing about our favourite activities from last time.

Here is my roundup of must do activities when in Lapland:

Sledging!IMAG3001.jpg
You can buy sledges in every supermarket big or small for about ten euros and they are the best investment you can make. Lapland has some great sledging slopes which provide hours of free, ready made fun. Once we stayed out zooming down the floodlit slope until gone midnight!

Husky sledding!IMAG2971.jpg
If you don’t do anything else in Lapland, you have to try driving your own team of Huskies across the snowy landscape or zooming along in a sled, with Huskies barking excitedly in the silent Lappish twilight. You can read about our last Husky adventure here.

Have a go at ice fishing!2017-01-06-00-15-28.jpg
It is an amazing experience to wander around the snowy wilderness of a frozen lake, knowing that a couple of feet below you, your dinner might be waiting! It is so interesting to learn about this activity which is a life skill passed down through the generations in Northern Finland. Drilling ice holes, fishing and best of all eating our catch, you can read about our fishing adventure here.

Riding Arctic Horses!IMAG2766.jpg
Its actually impossible to put into words how beautiful the landscape is in Lapland. The pastel coloured skies and snowy forests are fantastic to look at from the back of an Arctic horse, taking you places you wouldn’t normally be able to get to. You can read about our horse riding adventure here .

Meet Father Christmas!
IMAG3035.jpgOf course you can’t go all the way to where the big man in red lives and not go and visit him! After this adventure we all still believe! You can read about our visit to Santa’s house here.

We have been lucky enough to visit Lapland twice and it still hasn’t lost its magic. The first time we went for a weekend with Santa’s Lapland and had so much fun that the next time we went for a whole week to Ruka. I am so excited to be able take my children again early next year. Hopefully we will try more once in a lifetime adventures to tell you about!
